MH sports

A rundown of the various MH sporting fixtures in recent months.

Football

The Friendlies

Marriott Harrison trainees are responsible for organising football games against clients. I have the honour of trying to follow the Jordan Henderson of MH captains, Arjan Bains (with only one loss to his name).

The MH Football team has had another strong second half of the season under the steady leadership of Mr Bains and remains undefeated. With the addition of new signings such as Liberty Pearl and Tilly Tribe (and Tom Mann who is quite good), the squad has gone from strength to strength. Thank you to FRP Corporate Finance, Balderton Capital, PWC and many more for the games.

Armed with new football kits, we carried this strong form into two tournaments this June, where we looked to split our strength and take home all the gold.

The Octane Cup

We once again competed in the Octane Cup, armed with more firepower in the form of Tom Mann and Shaun Piesley. The team went on a great run in the group games mixing strong defensive play with free-flowing attacking football. Sadly, the loss of one match meant we were unable to compete for the main trophy, but we advanced to the Plate. With the semi-final against Octane, the team were nervous about whether the working relationship could handle an MH victory. The game went down to the wire and we were able to take home the win on penalties, sending us into the final. Unfortunately, the team we faced had an extremely strong Gerrard-esque midfielder who dictated the play and scored some unsavable shots from the halfway line. Congratulations to the better side on the day and thank you very much to Octane Capital for hosting us. It is always an amazing experience for trainees to be able to network with some of our biggest clients.

GP Bullhound Investor Allstars Tournament

On 6 June we were invited to take part in the Investor Allstars five-a-side tournament hosted by GP Bullhound. Despite a slow start, we were able to come back strong in the group games, qualifying for the plate. Determined to beat our competitors, we put on a most impressive display, firing three goals to Orrickā€™s nil, including a goal-of-the-tournament contender from Bradley Heath. In the dying moments of the game, Sadie Jacob rose tallest to meet a high ball, knocking it into the path of Brad, who obliged by powerfully striking the ball from 20 yards into the top corner of the net, past the despairing Orrick keeper. We progressed to the Plate final, however, the side was becoming increasingly fatigued following injuries to James Fleming and Tilly Tribe (the latter of whom bravely recovered in time for the final match). The final proved a bridge too far, as we lost out to deserving winners Kreos Capital.

The team stuck around to see Kreos lift the Plate, however the bitter taste of defeat was partially soothed watching clients Northzone lift the main prize, the Champions Cup, after their 3-0 victory over LendInvest in the final. Thank you very much to GP Bullhound for hosting a great tournament (though I may also be slightly biased given my affinity for the venue, Selhurst Park). Once again, this provided an amazing opportunity for our trainees to network and meet both current and potential clients, whom we hope to continue building relationships with as we progress through the firm.

Cycling

One of the great things about 80 Cheapside is the bike facilities. Bike repair teams visit frequently to make sure everyone is cycling to the office in record time. Recently, we have been lucky enough to have had MH branded cycling tops. We have just taken part in the London Duathlon, where six teams took part, running and cycling through Richmond Park.

Running

Our very own Joshua Hartle ran the London Marathon this year. Running a marathon is always an impressive feat and this is especially true when also travelling to and from Birmingham (to clarify, by train). As well as this, James Stenning ran the London Half Marathon in support of Leukaemia UK.

It is great to see members of our team engaging in both sport and charitable work and we are very lucky that we work at a firm that gives us time for sport and encourages us in what we do.
