Why Marriott Harrison was the right firm for me

Toby Ferrison

When I first began studying law, I was considering becoming a barrister. During law school, I completed a mini-pupillage at a tax chambers, which was an enjoyable and insightful experience. However, given the relatively solitary nature of a career at the bar, I found myself looking for a more cohesive, dynamic environment where I could enjoy the same level of work, but with greater emphasis on a collaborative, team-based approach. I read about Marriott Harrison and saw these attributes promoted on their website, so I applied for the summer vacation scheme and haven’t looked back since.

If I had to choose one word that sums up Marriott Harrison, it would be ‘genuine’. What you see is what you get. The firm has an aspirational culture, with people who are friendly, supportive and extremely hard working. The mid-size headcount and open plan office allow for seamless integration, meaning that you really feel like a part of the firm from day one.  The small trainee intake, paired with high quality, interesting work means that you take on responsibility early in your career, thus allowing you to progress your skills and confidence quickly.

Aside from work, there are numerous opportunities to be involved in CSR initiatives and business development. Marriott Harrison is committed to working with charities and everyone at the firm can join in. For example, I have helped to run a Christmas-themed coffee morning in partnership with Age UK and participated in an exercise bike cycling fundraiser. I have also been involved in a variety of sporting events, including playing in the MH Golf Day, football matches with clients and a cross-fit event in aid of Battle Cancer.

Finally, I was particularly impressed by the non-lawyers at the firm who are committed to keeping the firm running smoothly. The team is responsive and capable and were brilliant in helping me to settle in during my first week and beyond. Although it is common to focus on the solicitors at a firm when applying for a training contract, the broader team should not be overlooked. A good team will help to make your life considerably easier!
